I was doing projects for ad agency Activist, owned by my friend Barry Robinson, when this job landed to design a new Australian Births, Deaths & Marriages certificate. The old one looked years out of date but, more critically, was hopelessly easy to forge. With a large client review committee, we expected difficulty getting consensus. But, when sifting through our many national icons, I was inspired by an old copper Penny. Appropriating the curved type and low-relief kangaroo, I submitted this design along with many others. The whole project took over two years, but the design itself was accepted quickly and unanimously.
